On March 27, a social media user surnamed Chen described a disturbing stay at a hotel in Guizhou province.
Chen said they had booked a pet-friendly property for a trip with their puppy, but was taken aback when the hotel sent them an official message recommending local attractions, including the town’s dog meat speciality.
The hotel, above, sent the woman a message detailing attractions, one of which was a place where she could eat dog meat.

The location attached to Chen’s post showed the hotel was in Panjiang town, Guiding county, although its name has not been made public.
Publicly available information shows the hotel markets itself as pet-friendly, allowing guests to bring animals at no extra charge and offering a lawn for them to play on.

Staff said the hotel would generally avoid sending such messages to guests who had already indicated they were travelling with pets.
Otherwise, it routinely shared information on local dog meat specialities with visitors.
The explanation did little to stem the backlash on mainland social media.
One netizen said: “Imagine travelling with your dog near the hotel, only for it to pick up the scent of its own kind.
That is unbearably cruel.” A couple holding mock marriage certificates for their two dogs in Shanghai.
