After her beloved pet dog Papi, a 13-year-old white West Highland Terrier, was poisoned and killed in a children’s playground in her residential compound in Beijing in 2022, Li Yihan has dedicated her life to defending the animal’s rights.

Police found a 65-year-old man surnamed Zhang, who lived in the neighbourhood, to be the perpetrator.

It is also highly poisonous to humans.

On the same day, a total of 11 pet dogs were poisoned.

Nine died.

After that, Li sacrificed her job, her personal life and “all unnecessary social activities” for over three years to fight for her dog’s rights.

They had been together since the animal was two months old.

Li recently appeared on stage to speak about her experience.

Calling herself “Papi’s mum”, she recalled the dog’s last moments, saying it was the first time she had seen him in such pain.

Li has dedicated her life to getting justice for Papi.

She studied law books so she could bring a legal case against the perpetrator.

As China lacks a comprehensive animal protection law, Li had to study several legal texts, including the Civil Code and the Criminal Law.

She filed a private criminal prosecution and civil lawsuit against Zhang, while representing 10 other victims herself in court, as it was difficult to settle the legal fees for 11 prosecutors.

They achieved an unprecedented win in the first trial.

In December 2025, Zhang was given a four-year jail term for the crime of placing dangerous substances.

Li, above, decided to go public about the case despite the fact that she has faced intimidation over it.
