An Airport Authority spokesman said on Wednesday that the city’s airport had clinched the title of “Best Airport in the World” from Global Travel Awards this year.

The awards recognise the best hotels, airports, airlines, destinations and other travel facilities annually, based on votes cast by 2.5 million travellers from more than 150 countries.

The ranking was first launched 20 years ago.

Vivian Cheung Kar-fay, Airport Authority chief executive, pledged on Wednesday to continue expanding the airport’s network to reinforce the city’s role as an aviation hub. “We are truly honoured to receive the best airport awards across such a wide range of areas, which reflect the dedication and collective efforts of the entire Hong Kong International Airport community,” Cheung said.

Hong Kong International Airport was also voted the best airport in China in the 2026 TTG China Travel Awards, clinching the title for the third consecutive year.

This award was established in 2008 to recognise travel service providers including airlines, hotel groups and other travel-related businesses.

British aviation consultancy Skytrax recognised Hong Kong’s airport with the “World’s Best Airport Security Processing” award and “World’s Best Airport Washrooms” in its 2026 World Airport Awards. “These awards underscore HKIA’s commitment to maintaining rigorous security standards while actively leveraging innovative technologies to deliver efficient and seamless passenger experience,” the Airport Authority spokesman said.

The spokesman added that the authority had been upgrading security screening channels with CT-driven screening from traditional X-ray channels, with the coming Terminal 2 to feature the improved channels.

Hong Kong International Airport’s second terminal is set to fully open next month, and has been projected to serve 15 million travellers by the end of the year.

Its midterm goal will be to increase capacity to 30 million passengers.

The revamped terminal is part of the airport’s HK$141.5 billion (US$18.1 billion) expansion project launched in 2016, which also included a third runway.
