Labubu, Blackpink’s Jennie draw thousands to ComplexCon in Hong Kong

Photo: Edmond So Popular doll Labubu and Blackpink’s Jennie were among the headline names and brands from the city and abroad that drew thousands of fans to Hong Kong’s third edition of pop culture festival ComplexCon early on Saturday. Organisers said this year’s edition broke attendance records and estimated tens of thousands would show up for the two-day event. On Saturday morning, attendees took selfies with sculptures of the iconic figurine and queued for exclusive merchandise, while others explored local vinyl record social enterprises and T-shirt brands. At the opening ceremony, Secretary for Culture, Sports and Tourism Rosanna Law Shuk-pui said ComplexCon presented an “impressive and dynamic combination” of pop culture programmes and was backed by the government’s Mega Arts and Cultural Events Fund for a third year. “I am delighted to see that our city’s distinctive arts and culture DNA makes it the perfect home for this global convergence of style, trainers, music,” Law said. She added that beyond this year’s headliners Jennie and American rapper Yeat, she was excited that Hong Kong’s own renowned artist Lung Ka-sing, creator of Labubu, was the festival’s artistic director. “I am confident that this year’s ComplexCon from Hong Kong will not only resonate globally but also feel local,” Law said. Lung, Hong Kong-born artist raised in the Netherlands, met fans at the venue on Saturday morning. Diehard Labubu fan Zhang Tianwei bought a VIP ticket and planned his Asia work trip around ComplexCon. He flew to Hong Kong a few days earlier to grab the special merchandise and meet Lung at the event. The 34-year-old, who works in fashion in London, proudly showed off his Labubu dolls and tags, each freshly signed by Lung with his autograph drawn as whimsical eyebrows on Saturday.
