China and the US end trade talks as doubts form over Trump visit

Photo: Shutterstock China and the US wrapped up their sixth round of trade talks in Paris on Monday, with the agenda ranging from a possible extension of bilateral tariff and non-tariff measures as well as bilateral investment. “China and US conducted deep, frank and constructive consultations,” Li Chenggang, China’s top international trade negotiator, said after the meetings. Both sides agreed to “continue to maintain the stability of tariffs”, Li said. A day earlier US President Donald Trump told the Financial Times “it’s only appropriate that people who are the beneficiaries of the strait will help to make sure that nothing bad happens there”. He also said he would prefer to know Beijing’s position before he travelled there, adding “we may delay”. Trump called for China to aid US efforts to reopen the Strait of Hormuz after Iran closed the vital shipping artery in response to American and Israeli military strikes on the Persian Gulf nation in late February. Waiting until the summit would be “too late”, Trump was quoted as saying. The Chinese foreign ministry said on Monday that both sides were in contact over Trump’s state visit. More to follow …
